CMKI Therapy & Orthotics Continuing Education

The Hand Therapy and Orthotics Department hosts a number of educational seminars and courses each year. In addition the professional staff  is involved in multiple research projects with the staff and fellows in the Institute.  This includes playing a key role in the success of the hand transplant program by providing the intensive therapy the hand transplant patients need in the first three months post transplant.

Hand Therapy and Orthotic Center

The Christine M. Kleinert Hand Therapy Center brings comprehensive care to patients with acute or chronic issues relating to the Hand, Wrist, Elbow or Shoulder through a combination of rehabilitation and custom brace application. These services are provided by our team of specialized physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, and certified orthotic fitters in conjunction with the Kleinert Kutz physicians. We utilize a collaborative team process to gain optimal outcomes for patients of all ages.

Most of our therapists are Certified Hand Therapists (CHT), credentialed through the Hand Therapy Certification Commission. A CHT is an occupational therapist or physical therapist that has specialized in hand therapy and has a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including 4,000 hours or more in direct hand therapy practice.   In addition, the Certified Hand Therapist has successfully passed a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation. The Certified Hand Therapist credential offers assurance to the public the physical/occupational therapist has achieved the highest level of competency in the profession and stays up to date with practice within the field.

Services our Team offers:

  • Pediatric evaluation and treatment of congenital and orthopedic conditions
  • Evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses or injury
  • Customized programs for strengthening, range of motion and flexibility
  • Wound care
  • Scar management and edema control
  • Impairment ratings using the Greenleaf System
  • Injury prevention educational programs for employers
  • Joint Protection Program and Back-To-Work program for patients who need special job-oriented
    work conditioning
  • Patient education programs

While many patients of our patients are referred from a Kleinert Kutz physician, any individual referred from a physician for upper extremity physical/occupational therapy or an orthosis, may be treated at CMKI Therapy and Orthotics Center.

The CMKI Therapy and Orthotics Center offers an annual continuing education series to physical/occupational therapists treating hand conditions and injuries.   Please check back for the 2014 schedule.
